Lena also won the Advanced players tournament, playing superbly and winning in an exciting fifth and final game against Binhai Zhu of Bozeman. Ed Childers of Missoula took third in the Advanced division, while Ajay of Helena won the Novice tournament, with Rick Pyfer of Helena taking second in another excellent match that went down to a close tie-breaking last game in the finals. Players from Bozeman, Thompson Falls, Billings, Missoula and other towns joined a lot of players from Helena and had a great time in a tournament that included initial round robin play to establish seeding for a double elimination tournament that gave everyone a chance to play a lot. We need to give a lot of thank yous to Raye Vincent, Helena YMCA Health and Fitness Director (442-9622), for making all the arrangements and for her work all weekend during the tournament. The YMCA wants to start a twice-monthly table tennis session on Friday nights. I talked with Deb Clevenger (current President of the YMCA board of directors) at the end of the tournament and she said they'd be sending something out about this soon to everyone who played in this year's tournament. Novice division runner-up Rick Pyfer is the incoming President of the YMCA board. I know a lot of you, like me, would like to make this Friday night (2x/month) table tennis session happen and really help Helena table tennis get going at the YMCA. I'm sure we could get Lena Conlan to come back to lead some more table tennis clinics (everyone I talked to said she did a super job last Friday), and we could also invite Montana State Champion Rod Trahan of Billings back to Helena as well. Rod won last year's tournament, but was unable to come to Helena for this year's tournament. One thing the Helena YMCA needs is more (decent) tables -- they are hoping to buy some good new or used tables (so, if you have any leads on good tables at a decent price, call Raye Vincent), but it would be good to get a few good ones donated to the Helena YMCA as well. The small group that plays ednesdays (at either Harry Houze's house or Gary Hibbert's house) will soon be disbanding for the summer . We learned there is another regular Wednesday night table tennis group as well -- but maybe the Friday evening sessions at the Helena YMCA will begin soon. I'll send out more information about this as it becomes available. ~ Frank Kromkowski 443-0843/ 841-2780 "Sean O'Neill - About.com Table Tennis Guide" wrote: Date: Tue, 8 Mar 2005 13:07:24 -0500 From: "Sean O'Neill - About.com Table Tennis Guide" To: fkromkowski@YAHOO.COM Subject: About Table Tennis: Safir International Images, Coaching Tips and more Table Tennis In the Spotlight | More Topics | Heavy Spin Help | Specials at About.com from Sean O'Neill, your Editor and Guide Seeing old friends at tournaments is always a treat especially when they are coaches or teammates.
