Prerequisite Knowledge
In order to be in this course, you should be familiar with
Unix/Linux user-level commands, editors such as emacs or vi and the
general notion of command-line operating systems and scripting languages.
If you don't meet these prerequisites you will be overwhelmed by the
material in this course and you should not be in here.
Class Requirements &
Grading:
- Quizzes and exams: 60%
- Assignments: 40%
Quizzes:
There will be a quiz most weeks and a final exam covering all of the
course material.
Homework:
Homework will be primarily activities to be performed on your Linux system
with associated reports and/or answers to questions. Homework will normally
be included in the web pages. At various times, I will check your systems
to see if work is done and to assign a grade. There may be some homework
that will be submitted in class.
All homework will have an due date and is expected to be done by
that date, so that class discussions may be held concerning it.
Course Log:
Starting with the first day of class, you are to keep a log of all
of your system administration activities. This is an activity that all
system administrators find useful, as you will need to refer back to
problem solutions, telephone numbers, disk drive types, interrupt request
line configurations and thousands of other things. You always think you will
remember, but nearly never do. Get a spiral notebook or other bound
journal and write down
all of your activities with dates and times. You will turn this in at the
end of the semester and possibly at intermediate times. It is primarily for
your own use, during the course and afterwards, but this type of journaling
is standard for system administrators. Don't worry about making mistakes or
crossing things out; that's normal for a log.
Laboratories:
The laboratory part of the class will be supervised and unsupervised use of
EPS 259, where
systems will be set up for your use. The room will be open as much as possible,
but those hours will be curtailed if there are problems with theft or damage
of equipment. It might be somewhat crowded, so be good citizens, keep the
work areas clean and cooperate on the use of the room.
