Getting Up to Speed

Technical Preparation

For the first lab last week there were a number of students who did not yet have an account on esus.  There are also some students who have struggled with the first assignment simply because they have not had much experience yet in working with computers and computing environments.  This lab is dedicated to ensuring that all students are completely prepared to complete programming assignments, read e-mail, complete web pages, and perform the other tasks related to this course.  You will not be penalized for not having completed the assignments due from last week for this lab today.

By the next lab we will assume that all students are "good to go" with respect to the computing environment.

To Do

You are to do the following in this lab.

  1. Turn in your assignment.  Turn in the assignment due today according to your TA's instructions.  Please note that no one will be penalized today for not having the assignment done.  We expect to see some problems during the first week with esus accounts and other technical issues.  You will have this week to polish your web page and prepare it for final submission next week.
  2. Compile your first Java Program. Type in the Hello World program from your textbook.  Compile and run it in BlueJ.  You do not need to turn this program in or to show it to the TA unless you have problems.
  3. Demo your web page.  Bring your web page up on your computer.  The TAs will come around to do a quick check of the web pages. If you have not been able to complete the web page assignment your TA will help you during this lab period.
  4. Outlab

You will need to make sure your Webpages are complete by next week and I have posted another outlab due next week. It builds on using print statements, compiling, and over all syntax of a java program.
