Introduction ContinuedWednesday, August 1, 2004
We discussed the format of the course, which will have the following components. Seminar FormatThe course will proceed in the form of a seminar. We will all participate in the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge in the course. Theory to PracticeWe will examine the major components of an operating system as they are presented in standard textbooks. We will then see how these components are realized in a real operating system (Linux or some other variant of Unix). Hands On Operating System ExperienceEach student in the class has been assigned a computer in EPS 109 for use in installing and fiddling around with Linux (or some other Unix variant). ProjectsA number of projects will be assigned. Some of the projects will be for everyone. Some will be assigned to individuals or groups of individuals to learn about and then present to the rest of the class. DiscussionWe discussed some of the history of Unix and its importance as a general operating system that could be ported to different platforms.
