Pattern Recognition Project
The project requirements for CS 530 are as follows:
You will produce a paper of 10-15 pages (double-spaced), plus all the
figures, tables, data and code you want to use. The paper
is to be written in a professional style as you would use if
you were submitting it to a journal. That means it should be
concise, grammatically correct, and covers the following
points: a problem statement and its importance, what has been
done by other researchers, what you intend to add to the
body of knowledge, the methods that you used, the results you
obtained, an analysis of the results and further work that
you or someone else might undertake. As part of the project, you
must apply two different pattern classification methods which
I will approve.
You may work with one other person on a project. However, two people will
be expected to produce a more thorough project and will be graded
accordingly.
The schedule for the project is:
- September 15 - a list of 2 or 3 possible topics you might want
to investigate.
- October 6 - a problem statement for your project and a preliminary
discussion of previous work and methods including references.
1-3 pages.
- October 27 - preliminary data analysis. You will have collected
an initial set of data and determined how much data is needed
and a tentative feature set. 1-3 pages of analysis and
an explanation of the data collection methods used.
- November 10 - an initial discussion of methods and results.
2-4 pages describing the classification method or methods you have
tried and the results you have gotten. Suggest anything that you might
try to improve results, if necessary.
- December 8 - Final papers due.
- December 13-17 - Oral project reports.
