Project 2: Machine Learning Investigation

Due Date

This assignment is due at the beginning of the lecture on Wednesday, April 26th.

Partners

You are required to work with one other person on this assignment. Please submit just one solution with both of your names on it.

Assignment

Investigate a CS 536 topic of your choosing with the purpose of being able to conduct an interesting enough research project that you can submit your findings to the upcoming IASTED Computation Intelligence Conference.

Paper

Follow the length restrictions and exact formatting guidelines of the final paper requirements found at the above website.

Topic Proposal

No later than Friday, March 24th, e-mail John the topic that you plan to investigate and a description of how you plan to go about conducting the investigation. I will give you feedback and approval so that you are neither doing something too easy nor too hard.

Presentation

We will have two presentations during class on Wednesday, April 26th, three presentations at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26th (place to be announced) and two presentations during class on Friday, April 28th. Each presentation should be done using PowerPoint and should last 20 minutes with five of those minutes being devoted towards questions and answers. I will bring a sign-up sheet to class for the presentations shortly after spring break.

What to Submit to John

  1. One electronic and one hard copy of your paper.
  2. One electronic and one hard copy of your PowerPoint presentation.
  3. One hard copy of any supporting information (software that you write, data files, etc.) that illustrates what you have done.

Grading

  1. 60%. The quality of the research.
  2. 25%. The quality of the writeup.
  3. 15%. The quality of the presentation and the ability to answer questions.

Special Note

If your research is good enough and you are interested in making a few modifications to what you have done once the semester is over, we can go ahead and actually submit your work to the IASTED conference.
