HTML 4.01

CS 160 In-Lab 1

September 4, 2007

The purpose of the first part of this laboratory is to give you some practice with using linux, the Web and HTML. The second part of the lab is to have you start designing your Web page.

Each person should work individually on this assignment.

HTML

  1. First you are to log into your Esus account and change your password. Your TA will have a sheet of paper with your username and password. If you already have an esus account and you can't remember your password you must go to the System Admin's office and reset your password. Scott Dowdle, EPS 262.
Make sure you follow the password rules that should have been given to you with your password, and make sure you remember it because you will need to use it many, many more times. Use the sheet of linux commands linked here, Linux Commands
  2. Next create a www directory and make sure the permissions are correct.
  3. Next, using Notepad on your local machine, create a file called index.html. The index.html you create will have your name centered across the top using a h1 heading. It should have the html tag, heading tag, a title, the body tags and your name as stated above. Create this file on your local machine.
  4. Then using the SSH client transfer the file to your esus account.
  5. Make sure your permissions are correct.
  6. Go to a Web Browser and view your index.html.

Before you go on show your TA you have this much working.

Now make a Web page

Now that you have the basics down start developing your web page. You will have an outlab due next week that will be a personal Web site of two pages. One main page and another page with your schedule. We would like you to put a picture of yourself and any other pertinent information about yourself on your homepage. On the second page we would like you to have a table with your class schedule. If you have a problem with putting a picture of yourself on the Web, some people do, then just pick a picture of something that looks like you, maybe a rock (doesn't really matter, anything).
You can start working on this during your lab class and show the TA what you've done before you leave. All the details will be listed on the outlab assignment linked into your lab schedule. Make sure the TA has checked your lab before you leave the lab. You will earn points for completing the in labs as well as turning in the outlabs.

Next weeek's lab

Next week you will start writing Java programs. Make sure you come to class and read your book to prepare yourself for the applications we will be writing.
