Mathematical NotationMathematical notation: Just try to write something like
in HTML. It can't be done. What you see here is really just a picture (a .gif file). For true flexibility in authoring educational resources for the Web it would be necessary to have access to all of all of the capabilities for technical writing normally available to authors of traditional textbooks through such systems as LaTeX. Work is progressing on this front in the form of MathML (check out the World Wide Web Consortium), albeit very slowly. There isn't much profit to be made in developing such capabilities for the Web, or it would have been done long ago. For the time being we will work around this problem by avoiding certain notation and by using some of the patches (such as picture files) where necessary. As the technology advances, we will make corresponding changes to our hypertextbook. ![]() |
