One might conclude from the previous slide that the pipe pictured was made of an inferior metal that provided a good environment for biofilm growth. Perhaps a better metal, such as stainless steel, would eliminate concern about biofilm growth.  Not so, as this pipe cross-section illustrates.  The interior of this pipe was experiencing marked biofilm growth, leading to corrosion, even though it was constructed of stainless steel.
