This cross-section of a one-inch copper pipe also shows evidence of pitting and surface deposits, both results of biofilm-induced corrosion.  The presence of biofilm on a pipe surface can substantially increase such corrosive action and subsequent pipe deterioration.  As with stainless steel, copper is not immune to the harmful effects of biofilm growth.
