Assignments

January 11 Decide on a visualization system to learn and present to the class.
January 13 Decide on a hypertextbook project to develop.
January 18 Read the paper by the local Webworks group on hypertextbooks, which has been accepted by JERIC.
January 23 Send Rocky a digital portrait of yourself that is 100 pixels wide by 150 pixels high by 96 pixels per inch.
January 25 Read the NSF proposal on Biofilms: The Hypertextbook, submitted on January 24.
January 27 1. Prepare to give a brief overview of the system you have chosen to present. You will present on Wednesday or Friday of next week. Your overview should include:
  • A view of the project website
  • A discussion of the purpose of the project
  • An example, if possible, of an instance of the project (not one you have made up, but one that is found on the website or some other place if you can find one).

2. Begin to design a module on your chosen topic. Do this first by designing a presentation of your topic that you could do as a slide show.

3. Set up your virtual studio on your computer to be ready to develop your hypertextbook module. Read the January 27 session on the sessions link for options. If you do not have some of the necessary authoring tools and you want to spend as little money as possible, you can install the following components. If you do not have your own computer, please let me know and we will make arrangements.

  • NVU - Web authoring
  • Nikon camera software - digital image downloading from departmental Nikon camera. If you need to borrow a digital camera, check out the Nikon camera and installation CD from the department. Install the software. Learn how to take and download pictures with the Nikon.
  • Gimp - photo editing software
  • Canon digital video capture software - the department has some digital video cameras. There should also be some software with them for video capture. We will need to find some conversion programs on the Web for converting these files from the download format to a format suitable for the web.
  • Audacity - Audio authoring
  • Java Runtime Environment - download and install the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment (a recently installed version should work fine).
  • Quicktime - for running movies in a Web page

4. If you haven't already done so, create a website for yourself on your esus account. You do this by including a homepage.htm in a www directory in your root directory. Under your www directory you need to have another directory named 580. That way we can all get to your project page for this class at

http://www.cs.montana.edu/~yourloginname/580

January 30 David and Fuad are to present their chosen systems on February 1.
February 1 Monique and Bob are to present their chosen systems on February 3.
February 3 Rajini and Jake are to present their chosen systems on February 6.
February 6 Arun is to present his chosen system of February 8.

Reporting, Learning, and Using your Chosen System

Reporting: updating your web site

Your 580 web page should have a link to your chosen system (e.g., Alice).

The page arrived at through that link should have a short description of that system with links to other pages you create with more in-depth treatment. The first page should have the following information

  • Name of the system (e.g., Alice)
  • Authors or contact information
  • A hyperlink to the system web site
  • An abstract that is a short textual description of the system's intended use
  • A link to the main paper(s) for other class members to read
  • A link to the literature you found through an exhaustive search (both papers and URLs)
  • Our taxonomy filled in with respect to the system under study
  • Links to comparable sytems
  • Links to your in-depth discussions
    • include a link to your Power Point or Web presentation given earlier
    • include links to new pages you create as you add more of what you have learned about your chosen system.

Learning more about your chosen system

You now need to begin learning more about the system you have chosen to study. We will do a new round of presentations beginning in about two weeks. In particular:

  • Continue to do literature searches and add new sources to your list of references (both text sources and URSs)
  • Try things out or find out about places that are using the system
  • Feel free to contact the system authors if you have questions

Using your chosen system

Create a teaching/learning animation using your chosen system. This would be a simple one that just showcases the capabilities of the system (not to be confused with you class project, even if you are using the same system for that).

Working on your Project

  • Clarify your situation with Rocky if you plan to change topics at this point.
  • Work on a slide show of the concept you are planning for your hypertextbook module
  • Be sure to keep in close touch with Rocky about your ideas so that he can give you fedback.

February 13 Read the papers on the Resources link in the Papers section. Be reading them in the order they are presented there.
February 17

Prepare to demo slide show.

Read about learning and present.
