Research
My Research Interests
Driven by online social networks, smart phones, streaming video, and autonomous devices the demand for digital communications continues to grow. To keep up with the growing demand, service providers need to continually expand the capacity of their infrastructure. One approach is to throw money at the problem and simply deploy more bandwidth, but there is a more effective strategy.
I believe that in order to keep up with the growing traffic volume and to meet application traffic requirements we need to think harder about how to bring all available network resources online. We also need to work harder to manage the available communication resources effectively, especially when it comes to minimizing end-to-end delay, which often decreades user experience with network applications.
My research attempts to identify and exploit symbiotic relationships between different types of connectivity and traffic management techniques. The results demonstrate communication protocols that explicitly rely on heterogeneous connectivity and achieve higher quality of service and lower aggregate bandwidth usage. Work in my lab also considers the evolution of the public cloud services to a more uniformly distributed computational substrate. We leverage distributed computational resources to speed up user communications and decisions of application back-end logic, especially with respect to distributed and streaming datasets.
