10-Year Impact Award

Congratulations to Dr. Brittany Terese Fasy, whose paper “Local persistent homology based distance between maps” received the 2024 10-Year Impact Award at the ACM SIGSPATIAL Conference.  The selection was made by a senior committee from among the most cited papers from the 2014 conference and is one of the highest research honors conferred by SIGSPATIAL. BlackSky Collaboration

Professors Ann Marie Reinhold and Tomas Gedeon from Montana State University are proud to collaborate with BlackSky on a groundbreaking project funded by a $24 million Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) contract.  This partnership will leverage BlackSky's advanced AI and machine learning capabilities to enhance global moving target engagement services.  The university's expertise will contribute to researching and developing innovative solutions for real-time geospatial intelligence, benefitting both commercial and governmental applications.

Research Expenditure Record

During Fiscal Year 2024 (July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024), researchers in the Gianforte School of Computing expended $3.034 million dollars, a 33% increase over the previous high water mark of $2.266 million dollars.  Great job, everyone! [August 2024]

Collaborative Robotics + Human-Centered AI Grant

Dr. Laura Stanley and recent MSU graduate Dr. Apostolos Kalatzis were awarded an NSF EAGER grant for their project entitled "Personalizing Learning in a Complex Collaborative Robotic Manufacturing Assembly Task." The grant, totaling $300K over two years, will support the development of a novel training framework that integrates cognitive science, machine learning, collaborative robotics, and mixed reality technologies. The project aims to enhance user safety, efficiency, and satisfaction by creating personalized and adaptive training environments tailored to individual cognitive and sensorimotor capacities.  Congratulations! Best Paper Award

Dr. Brittany Terese Fasy and her co-authors received one of five best paper awards (out of 557 submissions) for their paper entitled "Rapid and Precise Topological Comparison with Merge Tree Neural Networks".  The paper will be presented at the 2024 IEEE Visualizalization conference in Florida in October.  Congratulations! Best Paper Award

Dr. Binhai Zhu, in collaboration with former student Dr. Letu Qingge's group at NC A&T State University, received a best paper award (out of 236 submissions) for their paper entitled "Probabilistic and machine learning models for the protein scaffold gap filling problem" at the 20th International Symposium on Bioinformatics Research and Applications (ISBRA'24). The paper initiates a first step to solve the important protein scaffold gap filling problem.  Congratulations!  [July 2024]

Innovative Counselor Training using Mixed Reality Simulation

A new research initiative by Dr. Laura Stanley aims to innovate counselor training using extended reality-based simulations, developed by a multidisciplinary team that includes MSU's Department of Counseling  and collaboration from local theater groups.  The project seeks to address the shortage of culturally competent mental health services in Montana, focusing on enhancing counselors' skills to engage with clients from diverse backgrounds, especially in remoate and Native American communities.  MSU News Article.  [May 2024]
