Why is an interdisciplinary approach a good way to study biofilms?

We would like to introduce our readers to interdisciplinary research by going straight to the people who know this work best. This page will contain video interviews of several biofilm researchers of international stature. We are asking them to tell their stories: how they got involved in interdisciplinary research in biofilms, who has influenced their work and their career development.
Each will also answer a different question from the set below:

            - What qualities are important in an interdisciplinary researcher?

            - What is it about biofilm that lends itself to interdisciplinary research?

            - How does a background in interdisciplinary research assist your career plans in industry and academia?

            - How has interdisciplinary experience influenced your perspective on other issues in the world (not necessarily science)?
